Pirates XC faster at New World Fall Spectacular

The coaches of the boys and girls Pirate cross coun-try teams insisted it was not hyperbole. Both the name of the meet and the teams’ performances last Saturday were “spectacular.”

Perhaps New World Fall Spectacular race director Richard Fannin deliberately chose that name for the meet to help inspire the 72 schools entering the six separate races. If not, the date near the end of the sea-son was a definite choice to, hopefully, provide a cooler day for faster times. Despite what Fannin called a “soft” course with one “shoe-sucking” muddy patch because of the heavy rains on Thursday, the best temperature of the season more than evened out the course conditions.

The Pirates entered 28 runners in three separate divisions — girls elite, girls JV elite and boys open.  Twenty Pirates set all-time personal records, the best times they have ever run on any type course and under any kind of conditions. Eight of the 10 Lady Pirates whom Coach Dave Reinhart entered in the girls elite race set PRs while two had season bests (SBs). In the girls JV elite race, five of the eight runners set PRs.

Jacksonville, Florida – For the East Ridge girls cross country team, yesterday’s meet was supposed to be a local meet at their cross-town rival’s school, Lake Minneola High School. The Hawk’s Last Chance Invitational was supposed to follow two consecutive large and distant invitationals that pinned the Knights against several Class 4A district rivals, including the FL. Runners Invitational in Lakeland and the Pre-State Invitational in Tallahassee. Although the FL. Runners Invitational was able to happen in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, unfortunately, the Pre-State Invitational had to be canceled in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. Seeking an opportunity to race against Class 4A state rivals this late in the season, the Fall Spectacular, held at New World Sports Complex in Jacksonville, presented itself as that opportunity for the Knights. East Ridge is no stranger to New World, as they competed there earlier in the season at the Cecil Field Summer Classic and last season at the Class 4A Region 1 Championships. However, this was the first time in Knights’ history that they competed in the New World Fall Spec

PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Hermanson sets Suwannee record at New World Fall Spectacular

Ryleigh Hermanson set a new Suwannee girls school record on Saturday, finishing with a time of 19:35 to place 66th out of 309 runners at the New World Fall Spectacular Elite Race at the Cecil Field Golf Course.

Hermanson broke her previous record of 19:48, which she set last year at the North Florida Classic. Her time would've been good enough for first place in both the B and C races at the event.

The SHS girls placed 34th as a team behind Hermanson's new school record. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Olivia Hermanson in 109th (20:00), Arwen Haley in 233rd (22:08), Sadie Siemon in 249th (22:29), and Virginia Mayhew in 257th (22:47).

The Suwannee boys competed in the B Race, placing 12th behind a sixth-place finish from Logan Haley (17:03) in a field of 400 runners. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Brig Scott in 46th (18:07), Kale Skinner in 91st (18:48), Brant Johnson in 94th (18:49), and Josiah Daniels in 159th (19:29).
