The Outer Worlds Companion Quest Guide: How to Unlock SAM

Here's how to unlock SAM in The Outer Worlds. In the beautiful sci-fi operation role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment, players will fly to different planets, complete missions, and stop the mega-corporations from taking over the Halcyon solar system. The best part of these quests is that you don't own to do it alone. Companions will follow along with the Stranger on missions throughout the game, killing enemies and bickering between themselves.

Choosing which two of the six total companions to take on quests is completely up to the player. Each companion has their own powers and buffs that will help gamers deal with the bandits and beasts that litter each space body. The Sanitation and Maintenance robot, also known as SAM, is one of the easiest and most effective companions to hold in your party. This instruction will show you exactly how to access the SAM unit and walk you through the steps required to get it working again.

  • Step 2: Find the Acid Sweeper
  • Step 3: Register your SAM Unit

Why a robot janitor is The Outer Worlds' best companion

Having a robot as your buddy is pretty much the dream for any fan of science fiction, and if you're playing The Outer Worlds you'll be pleased to find there's a robot companion available to follow you around on your adventures. And not only is this robot a great companion, he's the best of the six companions in The Outer Worlds.

His name is SAM, which stands for Sanitation and Maintenance. The janitorial robot was found on a scrapheap by your ship's previous owner and just needs a bit of fixing up to activate and weaponize him (we've got instructions on how to get SAM up and running in the article linked above).

What makes SAM so great? A whole buncha things. Note: there are a few small spoilers for The Outer Worlds companions below.

He's literally just a robot

In science fiction you rarely encounter a main character who is just a robot. Robots are typically borderline human. If they don't already have emotions then they at least aspire to have them. They want to understand why we cry, they want to know what love is, they watch old movies with their head cocked to one side, desperately trying to u

SAM in The Outer Worlds is a Companion that can follow you around on your journey with Quests and objectives of their own. They also have their own Abilities and Skills, Perks, and Alignment. Decisions you make when they are with you may cause them to leave if they disapprove of it, or make comments positively or negatively depending on what you do.

SAM in The Outer Worlds

SAM can be found on the 2F of the Unreliable. SAM has no proper AI and does not participate in decision-making, instead giving you slogan after slogan of pre-prepared corporate tidbits.

Parvati will frequently talk to SAM and repair it, which will happen at the engineering portion of your ship.

SAM and ADA seem to develop a relationship during your travels, which eventually turns physical. Walk in on them for some rather amusing conversations.

If you have Robophobia! you will get debuff when SAM is nearby.

How to Recruit SAM

SAM can be recruited into your party by completing the quest The Cleaning Machine, which is obtained b

Where To Find The Acid Steeper In Outer Worlds

Throughout The Outer Worlds, you team up with some great companions. However, they don't just join your side out of nowhere. You usually have to do something to gain their alliance. In the case of the automechanical known as SAM, you have to complete the Cleaning Machine quest.

During it, you not only bring the robot back online, but you transform SAM into a killing machine. It's a smart change since, in Halcyon, a murder bot is more useful than a cleaning one - and he doesn't completely give up on his original function anyway. To recruit the mechanical companion, here is everything you need to know.

Starting The Quest

To start things off, you must find the robot. They're on the top floor of your ship, in the storage room near the stairs. Hit the 'talk' prompt on the machine to discover that they're currently inoperable. So leave the conversation and go down to navigation to speak with ADA.

When the opportunity arises, ask the AI about "the automechanical gathering dust in the janitor's closet." ADA reveals that it&#
