Waynes world car licorice dispenser

A Madison entrepreneur has created a Wayne's World-inspired licorice holder that can be installed in more than just AMC Pacers.

The vehicle of choice is a 2025 Honda CRV, not a Kenosha, Wisconsin-built 1976 AMC Pacer named the Mirthmobile.

There is a second floor office above an Italian restaurant instead of a basement studio where a cable access show originates while the key scene, in this instance, is located in a parking lot on Madison Wisconsin's East Side instead of the streets of Aurora, Illinois.

Wayne Campbell and Garth Alger are nowhere to be found but Candy Phelps is here and attempting to bring back a bit of pop culture nostalgia from the 1990s.

Phelps, a Madison entrepreneur has come out with the "Party On! Licorice Dispenser." The device, which she has attached via magnets to the sunroof inside of her new SUV, is inspired by a similar contraption that had a bit role in both of the Wayne's World movies starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.

Candy Phelps was about 13 when she first saw the fictional invention that would stick with her for the next 30 years.

It was 1992 and “Wayne’s World” had just come out. A spin-off of a popular “Saturday Night Live” skit, the movie starred Dana Carvey and Mike Myers as public access TV show hosts who ride around in a 1976 Pacer nicknamed the Mirthmobile.

What caught Phelps’ eye was the licorice dispenser mounted on the ceiling of the Mirthmobile, which let passengers cut lengths of red candy rope on demand. Phelps searched mall gift stores hoping to find a similar device to install in her sister’s Ford Tempo.

“We lived in a really small town where literally all there was to do was cruise the drag,” said Phelps, who grew up in Big Timber, Montana, and now lives in Madison. “So it would have been pretty essential for our fun time, slash popularity, if we could have had a licorice dispenser.”

Plenty of Hollywood inventions have become real-life products, as United Kingdom entertainment news outlet Digital Spy reported in 2017. There are Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans – jelly beans with flavors like earwax, vomit, soap and dirt – from the Harry Potter books and movies
