Climate Policy Engagement Analysis

Climate Policy Engagement Overview: The World Steel Association (worldsteel) demonstrates active policy engagement that is partially aligned with policy pathways aiming to deliver the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. The association supported ambitious action to respond to climate change in its top-line messaging and is supportive of the decarbonization of the steel industry, with some exceptions. InfluenceMap did not detect engagement on specific climate regulations in 2023-25.

Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: worldsteel is supportive of ambitious climate action in its top-line messaging on climate policy. The association recognized the necessity of responding to climate change with global solutions on its website, accessed in May 2024. It also supported urgent action to decarbonize the steel sector to achieve net zero emissions in a September 2023 presentation. worldsteel supported the goals of the Paris Agreement in an April 2024 publication. InfluenceMap did not detect positions on the need for climate change regulation in 2023-2025.

We collect and publish data on steel market trends, develop standards and benchmarks for the steel industry to ensure best practices and represent the steel industry in dialogues with governments, international organisations and other stakeholders. We aim to promote the steel industry as widely as workable, provide a forum for our members, and advocate for sustainable steel production and usage, underlining environmental responsibility and innovation.

Traditional Iron and steelmaking technology is very mature, with rudimentary blast furnaces being first developed thousands of years ago. For hundreds of years this technology has controlled iron and steel production, gradually becoming more efficient and greater understood.  However, the use of this legacy technology generates larges amount of greenhouse gas emissions, which are now understood to be harmful.  Therefore, the progress of new breakthrough technologies in iron and steel making are now essential to significantly lower carbon emissions and combat climate change.
