Aztec or Mexica?

The term “Aztecs” is derived from the word “Aztlan,” which is believed to be the mythical homeland of the Mexica people. The Mexica, a Nahuatl-speaking indigenous group, migrated from Aztlan to the Valley of Mexico in the 13th century. Over time, they established their capital, Tenochtitlan, on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. The Mexica civilization grew to become a dominant force in Mesoamerica, forming the Aztec Empire.

A pochteca was a traveling merchant in the Aztec Empire. Pochtecas also are known to have traveled outside the empire to trade with neighboring kingdoms and peoples throughout Mesoamerica. Because of their extensive travel and knowledge of the empire, they were often employed as spies. The Pochtecas were a special merchant class in the Aztec society that specialized in long-distance trade on luxury items. They controled the great market at Tlatelolco. The pochtecas were mainly made up of the priests and warriors and they usually had their own separate section of the city in which to live in. They had their own guilds and often had special priviledges that other classes were not given.

Where was the city of Cahokia?

The city of Cahokia was located on the banks of the Mississippi River, near modern-day St. Louis, and was characterized by massive burial mounds. Cahokia was the largest urban concentration of Native Americans north of Mexico. Before it was abandoned in circa 1400 A.D., some 40,000 people were estimated to own lived there.
