World war 2 romance books

Reader Recommendations – Our favorite wartime historical romance (or not romance) novels

UPDATED MARCH 17th 2023!! This one was a request a couple of weeks ago, and I thought, absolutely YES!! LET’S MAKE A LIST!!

BTW, the usual favorites of course, are on here (like that one to the left, and of course The Bronze Horseman and Outlander – and by this point, I’m sure most of us have devoured them). But I promise you there are a TON more recommendations below (many that are new-to-me) and sound AMAZING!!!!!!

Lorna asked:

Lorna: Do you have any recommendation for a historical fiction?I just finished The Nightingale and it was such a good book. Now I am on a WWII/ historical fiction kick!

Maryse: I do have a category called “war time” and most of it pertains to historical fiction. I need to expand on this section!! 😀 https://www.maryse.net/tag/war-time. We also created this super-short list back in 2015.

But let’s do even better than that!! Your favorite WAR-TIME historical romance (or just war-time historical fiction) books? Let me know.

P.S. Mine is The Nightingale. 🙂

world war 2 romance books

Every love story is built with inherently high stakes. After all, a heart can be the ultimate prize, and courtship a most dangerous risk. And love, as we all know, won’t stop for much. Our hearts pay no attention to timing or impediments, and logic falls by the wayside as we feel the anguish of lost love, or the triumph of love realized.

All by itself, love is tense and wondrous. But add in war, the threat to our very existence and humanity, and those stakes fly through the roof. For me, novels that explore love affected by war are the ultimate page-turners; books that might break or—surprisingly —mend your heart. After all, when the world is bleak and harsh, and a heart still finds the ability to soar, what could be more beautiful?

In my novel Take What You Can Carry, an American woman and her Kurdish boyfriend visit Kurdistan of Iraq in 1979, a time when the government tried to break the Kurds and their will, when friends and neighbors were pitted against one another, and a simple night out could end in devastation. I knew from the politics and the setting that the struggles would take them to the brink, and either make or break their love.

Jillianne’s Favorite WWII Novels

I hope you like book covers featuring women walking away with planes overhead because you’re about to see a lot of them.

Readers who enjoy the drama and danger of novels set during the Second World War have a lot to choose from. There seems to be a WWII novel for every type of reader. For instance, my WWII novel, The Hobby Shop on Barnaby Street, is a romance with an emphasis on friendship and empowerment, and some silliness thrown in for good measure. Oh, and quite a few bombs.

You might notice most of the books I’ve listed here take place in England—I’m a hopeless Anglophile. My favorite WWII-era novels can generally be broken down into two categories: Hopeful Homefront Women’s Fiction and Everything Else. Everything Else is closer to the frontlines, has a more serious tone, and is more exciting while Hopeful Homefront Women’s Fiction focuses on the daily lives of normal people, their challenges, and their relationships. Since my Homefront Hearts trilogy lands in the Hopeful Homefront category, I’ll start there.
