| ABOUT US A little in The US and the 1998 World CupOur series on the US at the World Cup continues with a look at the 1998 World Cup, hosted by France. The lead up to the 1998 World CupThe 1994 World Cup had been a resounding success for US soccer. Match attendance had reached a level that has yet to be surpassed in the World Cups that followed. Extensive television coverage had increased awareness of both soccer and the World Cup in US households. The US team had even played surprisingly well and had managed to advance to the Round of 16 where it lost to eventual tournament winners Brazil. The momentum created by the World Cup was furthered when Major League Soccer debuted in 1996. Actually, delays in finding the necessary investors to get the league underway led many to wonder if the momentum gained as a result of the 1994 World Cup was being squandered. When it became clear that the league would not be able to start in 1995 as planned, Tab Ramos, the first to sign a MLS contract, expressed the fears of many when he said, “It seems like soccer has disappeared again.” While it had been eight years from when it was announced that the US would host the 1994 tournament finals US World Cup SquadsThe United States National Team has appeared in eleven World Cups. In the first World Cup, the US finished fourth, their best finish in the competition. In 1934, there was no group stage and the US were knocked out by hosts Italy in the opening round. The US missed the 1938 World Cup, qualifying for the next final when the tournament resumed in 1950. The 1950 Cup is remembered for the shock upset of England – a country that had opted against participating in any previous World Cups. The US would fail to qualify for the next nine World Cup finals, a gulf that included the entire run of the North American Soccer League. Returning for the first time in forty years for Italia ’90, the US were impressive against Italy fielding a young side. Hosting in ’94, they advanced to the first knockout stage on a unique wildcard rule after finishing third in their group, tying Switzerland and beating Colombia. The US would lose to eventual champions Brazil 1-0 to exit the tournament. In 1998, the US finished last in the field of 32 in France. Suffering from internal disagreements and a tough draw, the US went three and out losing to Germany, Iran, and Yu USA Players in the 1998 Soccer World CupMidfieldersJersey | Player | (DOB/Height/Club) | 2 | Frankie Hejduk | Aug 05, 1974 5' 8" / 1.74 m Columbus Crew (USA) 7 | Roy Wegerle | 8 | Earnie Stewart | Mar 28, 1969 5' 8" / 1.75 m NAC Breda (NED) 10 | Tab Ramos | Sep 21, 1966 New York Red Bulls (USA) 13 | Cobi Jones | Jun 16, 1970 5' 6" / 1.70 m Los Angeles Galaxy (USA) 14 | Preki Radosavljevic | Jun 24, 1963 5' 8" / 1.75 m 15 | Chad Deering | Sep 02, 1970 Wolfsburg (GER) 19 | Brian Maisonneuve | Jun 28, 1973 Columbus Crew (USA) 21 | Claudio Reyna | Jul 20, 1973 5' 10" / 1.78 m Manchester City (ENG) | |||||||||||
