What are bao buns?

A steamy treat

Bao buns are a type of steamed bun originating in Chinese cuisine. You might hear them called baozi, mantou, or simply steamed buns. Regardless of the name, they all share a common characteristic: a soft, pillowy dough encasing a delectable filling. The dough itself is made with flour, yeast, sugar, baking powder, milk, and oil, resulting in a slightly sweet base that complements the fillings perfectly.

What’s inside?

The beauty of bao buns lies in their endless variety. These steamed buns are a playground of flavour options, with both sweet and savoury fillings. More classical fillings include pork belly simmered in a savoury sauce (ours is paired with mustard miso!) or smoked pork with a sweet and salty glaze; we chose yellow chilli honey as the perfect pairing.

For vegetarians and vegans, portobello mushrooms are a great choice and can be seasoned to mimic the texture and flavour of beef, making it a must-try. Aubergine also works really well which is why we pair it with a sweet miso glaze for an amazing flavour. Steamed or stir-fried vegetables like cabbage, carrots and peppers create a healthy and flavourful filling.

BAO vs. SN evidence for evolving dark energy

We critically review the evidence for time-varying dark energy from recent Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Supernova (SN) observations. First, we show that such evidence is present at the 3σ level, even without the new BAO data from the dark energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), by instead using BAO data from the dark energy Survey (DES), combined with the DES5Y supernovae and Planck CMB data. Next, we examine the role of the DES5Y supernova dataset, showing that the preference for time-varying dark energy is driven by the low redshift supernovae common to both the DES5Y and Pantheon+ compilations. We find that combining Pantheon+ and DES5Y supernovae by removing the common supernovae leads to two different results, depending on whether they are removed from the DES5Y or the Pantheon+ catalog, leading to stronger or weaker exclusion of ΛCDM, at the (3.8σ) and (2.5σ) level, respectively. These common supernovae have smaller error bars in DES5Y compared to Pantheon+, and, as recently pointed out, there is an offset in magnitude in DES5Y between supernovae at (z > 0.1), where almost all the measurements taken during

Everything you need to know about Bao Buns

Bao Buns (pronounced “bow”), but also known as a ‘steamed buns’ or ‘baozi’ 包子, are a delicious, warm, fluffy treat of stuffing wrapped inside a sweet, white dough. Made with a mix of flour, yeast, sugar, baking powder, milk and oil, the bao is a tad sweeter than its closely related cousin, the dumpling. It is a type of filled bun or bread-like dumpling that originates from Chinese cuisines.
